As the name says, this crane truck uses pneumatics. A Technic pneumatic system is built around a pump, flexible hoses, switch valves and cylinders: you build up pressure, flip a valve and a cylinder extends or retracts. It is a very direct way to move a heavy boom without long chains of gears and axles. Many builders remember sets like this as the first time a model behaved like a real piece of machinery rather than a static replica.

Parts and variety

The 863 pieces are made up of 162 distinct parts, which is a lot of variety for a set of this size. That fits a model that has to combine a chassis, a crane superstructure and pneumatic plumbing.
