Description

Built the old way

Technic in 1988 relied on bricks with studs on top and holes through the sides. Plates braced the structure, pins and axles joined everything together, and gears transferred motion. Studless liftarms had not yet appeared. Building the Test Car therefore feels very different from assembling a modern Technic vehicle: strength comes from stacking and cross-bracing rather than from triangulated beams. If you are curious about the roots of the system, this set is a good way to experience them first hand.

What the name suggests

Cars have been central to Technic from the start, because they are ideal for showing how a drivetrain, steering and suspension work. The name Test Car hints at a vehicle meant for trying out engineering ideas. The building instructions cover the mechanisms this particular model includes. With 898 pieces and 130 distinct part types, it sat towards the upper end of what Technic offered in the late eighties, and it still rewards a patient builder today.

Late-eighties colours

Light grey leads the colour list, with black, red and blue following. This is the older grey, replaced years later by light bluish grey.
