About Lion Knights

The knights at the heart of Castle

In the early years of Castle, the king's lion-crested knights held the big fortresses while other factions such as the Black Falcons and the Forestmen came and went around them. The sets cover the full range of medieval play: a castle to defend, a tower to storm it with, a convoy to escort prisoners and a tournament to settle scores. Lion Knights is a collectors' label rather than an official product line, used to group these sets by faction.

King's Castle and the mountain fortress

King's Castle (6080-1), released in 1984 with 679 pieces, is the largest set and one of the best-known Castle models of its era. It was joined that year by Siege Tower (6061-1, 216 pieces). King's Mountain Fortress (6081-1), from 1990, moved the king onto a rocky hilltop and has 438 pieces.

Re-releases worth noting

Guarded Inn first appeared in 1986 as 6067-1 and returned in 2001 as 10000-1, with 256 pieces both times. The tournament set was also issued twice, as Knights Challenge (1584-1) in 1988 and Knight's Challenge (6060-1) in 1989, each with 168 pieces. Prisoner Convoy (6055-1) from 1985 has 116. The later end date of 2016 reflects a small number of sets filed with this faction long after its peak, so do not expect a continuous run of releases.
