A town of animals

Fabuland's characters are chunky figures with animal heads, larger than a minifigure and easier for small hands to hold. Each has a name and a role in town, which the set names often reflect, as in Cathy Cat's & Morty Mouse's Cottage (341-2) from 1979 with 115 pieces. Buildings are made from large panels, doors and roof elements, so a house takes shape in minutes rather than hours. That made the theme a stepping stone between the large bricks for toddlers and the minifigure worlds of Town, Castle and Space.

Civic buildings and homes

Fire Station (3682-1) from 1987 is the largest set at 157 pieces. Town Hall exists twice in the first year, as 350-3 with 147 pieces and 140-1 with 139. The Fabuland House (3678-1) from 1982 has 145 pieces, Cottage (132-1) 116, General Store (3675-1) 115 and Hospital (137-1) from 1979 111. Put together, they form a complete little town with a town hall, a shop, a hospital and a fire brigade. The piece counts sit close together, and even the biggest building stays below 160 pieces.

Collecting Fabuland now

Over its eleven release years the theme reached 107 sets, many of them small character sets alongside the buildings. The distinctive figures, the bright colours and the specialised elements have given Fabuland a loyal following among adult collectors, many of whom first met the characters as children. Because many parts were never used elsewhere, the parts list on each set page is the quickest way to find out what is missing from a secondhand set, whether that is a figure, a door or a roof element.
