A theme about everyday life

Homemaker has no knights, spaceships or police cars. Its sets recreate domestic interiors and a handful of public places, with furniture such as cupboards, tables, cookers and beds built from basic bricks and plates. Some sets include the large brick-built figures of the period, which are considerably taller than the minifigure that came along later. The focus is on the room and what goes in it, so the sets feel closer to a dolls’ house than to a town layout.

The biggest builds

Bungalow (232-1) from 1978 is the largest set at 474 pieces. Hospital (231-1), also from 1978, comes second with 401 pieces, and Hairdressing Salon (230-1) from the same year has 229. Complete Children's Room Set (262-2) dates from 1972 and has 260 pieces, making it one of the larger early releases. The two 1978 sets show that by the late 1970s the theme had moved on from single rooms to whole buildings, with the Bungalow offering more pieces than any other Homemaker release.

Room by room through the decade

Living Room Set (264-1) from 1974 has 242 pieces. Family Room (268-1) and Kitchen (269-1) followed in 1979 with 253 and 211 pieces, and the final year, 1982, brought Schoolroom (5235-2) with 233. Put together, these sets let you build up a whole house one room at a time. Because they rely heavily on standard bricks, “What can I build?” on Bricoria is a practical way to see which of them you could rebuild from an old tub of mixed bricks. Colours matter here too, as much of the furniture relies on specific shades, and the parts lists show the colour of every element.
