About Scala

From jewellery to family homes

The first Scala boxes of the late 1970s contained small decorative elements that children could clip together into rings, bracelets and pendants. That chapter was brief. In the late 1990s the name was revived for something entirely different: large dolls with fabric outfits, furnished houses and everyday accessories. The figures are on a far bigger scale than minifigures, and a good deal of the furniture was moulded specifically for this line. Nearly two decades separate the two phases, so the catalogue entries can look as though they belong to two unrelated themes.

Houses, rooms and stables

The biggest sets are almost all homes. The Big Family House (3290-1) from 1997 leads with 316 pieces. Carla's Winter Camp (3148-1, 303 pieces) and Happy Home (3149-1, 274 pieces) both arrived in 2000, while Sunshine Home (3119-1) followed in 1998 with 185 pieces. Smaller boxes fill in the rest of daily life: Dream Cottage (3270-1), Fun Fashion Boutique (3118-1), Marie's Room (3142-1) and, from the final year, Indie's Stable (3124-1) with 117 pieces. All eight of the largest sets belong to the dolls’ house era from 1997 onwards.

Who collects it now

Scala tends to attract collectors interested in the less familiar side of the brick world, as well as people who owned the sets as children. Complete examples are harder to track down than most sets of the same age, partly because so many of the elements are unique to the range and easily separated from the box. Fabric clothing also fades or goes missing over the years, which is worth bearing in mind when you buy.
