Kylo Ren's shuttle picks up the idea of the Imperial Lambda shuttle, with huge vertical wings, but pushes it into a sharper, more menacing form. It makes its entrance in the opening of The Force Awakens, descending on a village on Jakku, and appears again in The Last Jedi. That link between old and new designs is a big part of its appeal.
