R2-D2 is there almost from the very beginning. In A New Hope he carries the Death Star plans to Obi-Wan Kenobi; in The Empire Strikes Back he fixes the Millennium Falcon's hyperdrive at the last possible moment; and in Return of the Jedi he helps open the way into the shield generator on Endor. He also serves Padmé and Anakin throughout the Prequel trilogy. For a character who never speaks a word, he has an extraordinary record of rescues, which makes him a natural choice for a model of his own. Few fans would argue that any other droid deserves the honour more.
