Geonosis and beyond

The AT-TE makes its debut in the closing battle of Attack of the Clones, when the newly created clone army lands on Geonosis. The walkers advance on six legs across the arid ground, carrying a heavy cannon on their backs and sheltering troops as they move. The vehicle later becomes a regular sight in The Clone Wars. Its low, wide body and many legs set it apart from the Empire's later walkers, though the family resemblance is clear.

Compressing six legs

Fitting a six-legged walker into 63 pieces is no small task. Even so, the set uses 32 unique elements, around half the total, which shows a fair amount of variety for a design built on repetition. Light bluish grey is the main colour, followed by dark bluish grey, black and dark red. Dark red was the typical accent colour for Republic vehicles of this era. There is no minifigure, so the focus is entirely on the walker.

Old and new side by side

Collectors who follow a single vehicle across the years will find this 2004 model a useful reference point. Placed next to newer AT-TE sets, it shows how building techniques and the range of available parts have changed over two decades.
