Yoda first appears in The Empire Strikes Back, hiding in the swamps of Dagobah, where he trains Luke Skywalker in the ways of the Force. The prequel films show him centuries earlier as a leading member of the Jedi Council, and in Attack of the Clones he finally draws his lightsaber. His small size and odd grammar hide enormous wisdom and power, which is exactly why he is one of the most quoted and recognisable characters in the whole saga.
