Description

From Hoth to the desk

The Imperial walkers first marched across the snow in The Empire Strikes Back, closing in on the Rebel base on Hoth while snowspeeders tried to bring them down with tow cables. Their shape is instantly recognisable: four tall legs, a long armoured body and a forward head with guns. This compact version keeps the outline but shortens everything, so the legs become stubby and the head sits close to the body. It is still clearly an AT-AT, just a far friendlier one.

Repetition that helps

Only 36 of the 88 pieces are unique elements, a low share for a model of this size. The four legs account for much of that repetition, since each one is built in the same way. For a young builder, that is useful rather than dull: after the first leg, the next three are practice, and the whole walker comes together quickly. Once finished, the minifigure completes the scene, and the solid construction copes well with being marched around the floor.

An Imperial palette

Light bluish grey and dark bluish grey lead the parts list, supported by black and trans-red. It is a sober mix, in keeping with the Empire's machinery, which rarely carries bright markings. Next to Rebel ships in white, orange or red, the walker looks suitably grim. Small models like this also work well as a collection, lined up to recreate the Battle of Hoth on a shelf without the space or cost that a large display set would demand.
