Description

Old greys and a pearl finish

The main colours listed in the catalogue are black, light grey, dark grey and pearl light grey. The first three are the classic tones used until around 2004, when the palette switched to the bluish greys still used today. Pearl light grey is a metallic, slightly shimmering shade that makes the car look silver on the shelf. If you intend to mix this set with newer Technic parts, keep that in mind: the old and new greys are easy to tell apart once they sit next to each other.

A car of its own design

Unlike many later Technic cars, Silver Champion is not a replica of a real production model. It is an original design, typical of a period when the range focused on generic supercars and racing machines rather than licensed vehicles. That gives it a certain charm for collectors, who can trace how Technic cars developed from these self-styled models to the officially branded ones that followed. The set contains no minifigures, just the car and the mechanics that make it up.

Between studded and studless

Around the turn of the millennium, Technic was in transition. Studded beams were still common, but smooth studless liftarms were taking over more and more of the structure. Sets from this era often combine both systems, which makes for a varied and occasionally surprising build. Here the 1,433 pieces span 156 part types. It is a satisfying size for a builder with some Technic experience: long enough to be absorbing, yet manageable over a weekend rather than several weeks.

Hunting down a copy

As a set from 2000, Silver Champion is now mostly found second-hand. The inventory on this page lists every element with colour and quantity, which helps when checking a used lot, and it is particularly worth watching the pearl pieces, since they are harder to replace than standard black or grey parts. Once the collection is complete, the What can I build? tool shows which other sets you could put together from the same inventory.
