IG-88's big moment is brief. After the Battle of Hoth, Darth Vader gathers a line-up of bounty hunters on the bridge of his Star Destroyer, the Executor, and sets them after the Millennium Falcon with one condition: no disintegrations. Alongside Boba Fett, Bossk, Dengar, Zuckuss and 4-LOM stands IG-88, a tall, spindly droid with a cylindrical head. He says nothing and barely moves, yet those few seconds were enough to make him a fan favourite.
A droid without a master
Most droids in Star Wars serve someone, whether as translators, mechanics or messengers. IG-88 is different: an assassin droid working as a bounty hunter, loyal to whoever pays. That makes him one of the more unsettling machines in the saga, a reminder that droids in this galaxy are not always helpful companions.
