The X-wing has been the hero's fighter since Luke Skywalker used one to destroy the Death Star in A New Hope. In the sequel trilogy, the Resistance flies a newer version of the design, seen in The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, with Poe Dameron as its best-known pilot. The split wings that open into an X in flight are still there, and that shape is what lets even a 42-piece model read clearly as an X-wing.
