In the animated series Rebels, the TIE Defender is the pet project of Grand Admiral Thrawn, who pushes for a fighter far more capable than the standard TIE. The Rebels, in turn, go to considerable lengths to disrupt its development. Visually, the ship is easy to tell apart from every other TIE: instead of two wing panels, it has three, arranged evenly around the central cockpit. That three-pointed star shape is the key feature of any model of the Defender.
