About Insectoids

Insectoids was one of the last Space sub-themes of the 1990s, and one of the most unusual. Rather than streamlined rockets, its craft borrow their shapes from hornets, beetles and spiders, with pairs of wings, feelers and multi-legged frames. Names like Hornet Scout (2965-1), Cosmic Creeper (6837-1) and Planetary Prowler (6919-1) leave little doubt about the inspiration.

Arachnoid Star Base (6977-1) is the largest set with 438 pieces, and its name already hints at the spider-like design. Celestial Stinger (6969-1, 256 pieces) and Planetary Prowler (6919-1, 249 pieces) follow, then Bi-Wing Blaster (6905-1) with 114. Sonic Stinger exists in two versions: the regular set (6907-1, 96 pieces) and a variant sold with a promotional mask (6909-1, 97 pieces). All of the eight largest sets were released in 1998, the first year of the theme.
