About Life On Mars
Humans and Martians
Earlier Space lines usually invented their own worlds; this one chose Mars. The human crews set up bases and send out vehicles to explore, while the planet's native inhabitants have their own craft and minifigures. Set titles such as Alien Encounter (1195-1), Red Planet Cruiser (7311-1) and Recon-Mech RP (7314-1) give a sense of the story, which revolves around exploration and first contact rather than all-out war between factions. That puts it closer in spirit to Classic Space and Exploriens than to the police-and-villain lines such as Space Police I and Blacktron.
The main wave
The core sets carry consecutive numbers from 7311 to 7317 and were all released in 2001. Aero Tube Hanger (7317-1) is the largest with 709 pieces, followed by Excavation Searcher (7316-1) with 466 and Solar Explorer (7315-1) with 249. Red Planet Protector (7313-1, 193 pieces) and Recon-Mech RP (7314-1, 189) sit in the middle, while T3-Trike (7312-1, 99 pieces) and Red Planet Cruiser (7311-1, 73) are the entry-level models. Alien Encounter (1195-1) is a small set with 42 pieces. Across the eight largest sets, the range runs from 42 to 709 pieces, so there is something for a quick build as well as a bigger project.
Life On Mars and Mars Mission
Mars returned as a setting a few years later in Mars Mission (2007–2008), which took a more action-heavy direction with bigger vehicles and hostile aliens.
