About Fantasy Era
Why the name
On the box these sets simply said Castle. Fans added the Fantasy Era label to separate this wave from the more historical ranges that came before and the Kingdoms line that followed in 2010. The difference is obvious from the cast: instead of rival knightly houses, the knights here fight undead soldiers early on, then trolls, with dwarves appearing as allies who mine beneath the mountains.
The big builds
The largest item is the Fantasy Era Castle Giant Chess Set (852293-1) from 2008, with 2,455 pieces and a full board of brick-built pieces. Medieval Market Village (10193-1), released in 2009 with 1,619 pieces, is a calmer model focused on houses and trade rather than battle. Among the play sets, King's Castle Siege (7094-1, 974 pieces) from 2007 anchors the range, while Trolls' Mountain Fortress (7097-1, 845 pieces) closed it out in 2009.
Ships, mines and war machines
Several sets move the fighting away from the castle walls. Skeleton Ship Attack (7029-1) has 630 pieces, Troll Warship (7048-1) 494 and Troll Battle Wheel (7041-1) 508. Dwarves' Mine (7036-1), with 574 pieces, gives the dwarves their own base with tunnels and carts. Placed side by side, these models form a larger battlefield, which is one reason the range remains popular with people who build displays.
Checking a collection

The larger castles and fortresses use a lot of standard grey and brown bricks, so a well-stocked collection often gets closer than you might expect. Specialised elements such as the troll and dwarf figures are harder to replace, and the parts list makes it clear which of those a set should include.
