A single-year theme

Few Castle sub-themes were as short-lived. Everything in Knights Kingdom I came out in 2000, and by 2001 the shelves had moved on. The story is simple and easy for younger builders to follow: King Leo defends his castle and his treasury, while Cedric the Bull and his rebels try to seize the throne. The numeral in the name is a fan convention that separates this range from Knights Kingdom II, a different story that began in 2004.

The castle, twice

King Leo's Castle is listed under two numbers. 6091-1 has 539 pieces and 6098-1 has 538, so the two versions are almost identical. Comparing their parts lists is the quickest way to tell which one you have. The rebels' answer is Bull's Attack (6096-1), a 314-piece set that is the second largest in the theme.

Jousts and siege engines

Below the two big castles the sizes drop quickly. Royal Joust (6095-1) has 104 pieces and Guarded Treasury (6094-1) 103, both built around small, self-contained scenes. The catapults and chariots are smaller still: Catapult Crusher (6032-1, 56 pieces), Knight's Catapult (4816-1, 50) and Rebel Chariot (4819-1, 49). They add action outside the walls and are an affordable way to start a Castle collection.

Because the whole range was released in one year, it works well as a self-contained collecting goal. A sensible route is to start with the catapults and chariots, then add Bull's Attack so that both sides of the story are represented before tracking down one of the two castle versions.
