Powered through the track

The 9V system replaced both the battery-driven 4.5V trains and the older 12V layouts. Its key idea was metal-topped track that carried current straight to the motor, fed by a transformer with a speed regulator. No batteries needed changing and no separate conductor rail was required, so a layout could run for as long as you liked. That reliability is a big reason why many adult train builders still use 9V track today. The range continued until 2007, and within the Train theme it was followed by the remote-controlled RC Train branch.
