The Droid Developer Kit (9748-1) from 1999 has 658 pieces and lets you build small moving droids, with R2-D2 as the headline model. The Dark Side Developer Kit (9754-1) followed in 2000 with 578 pieces and focuses on the Empire, including a walking AT-AT. Rather than the larger RCX, both kits use the Micro Scout, a compact brick with a built-in motor, a light sensor and preset behaviours that run without a PC. That made them an easier entry into robotics than the full Robotics Invention System, and the parts lists show how many Technic elements they contain.
