About Expert Builder

Where Technic began

Expert Builder introduced a building system based on studded beams with holes, axles, gears and friction pins, all compatible with ordinary bricks. It let children build working steering, gearing and moving parts rather than static shapes. Because the later Technic range grew directly out of this line, Expert Builder is filed as a Technic sub-theme, and many of its basic elements survive in updated form in current sets. The beams of this era carry studs on top, so they stack like regular bricks, which gives the models a chunkier, more enclosed look than modern studless Technic. For many children in the late 1970s, these were the first sets whose models actually moved when you turned a crank or a wheel.

Notable models

The largest set is the Car Chassis (8860-1) from 1980 with 676 pieces, closely followed by the Tractor (8859-1) from 1981 with 612. The first Auto Chassis (853-1) appeared as early as 1977 with 608 pieces, and a second version (956-1) followed in 1978 with 603. The Mobile Crane also exists twice: 855-1 from 1978 with 511 pieces and 955-1 from 1979 with 512.
