About Building
A town made of bricks, not figures
Legoland is the umbrella name for the town and everyday sets that preceded the minifigure, which only arrived in 1978. Without figures to fill the scene, these sets put the buildings first. Walls, windows, doors and pitched roofs do most of the work, often paired with a small car or van to suggest daily life on the street. The result is a style of building that feels architectural rather than playset-driven.
Homes, a mill and a town square
Domestic buildings make up a large share of the range. House with Car (346-2, 167 pieces) dates from 1969, the Terrace House with Car and Garage (353-1, 153 pieces) from 1972 and the Swiss Villa (356-1, 150 pieces) from 1973. For something less ordinary there is the Windmill, 211 pieces, which is listed both as 362-1 from 1975 and as 550-2 from 1976. Commercial life is represented by the Tea Garden Cafe with Baker's Van (361-1, 215 pieces) from 1974 and the Taxi Garage (368-1, 156 pieces) from 1976.
The largest set in the group
Top of the list is the Town Center Set with Roadways (355-1) from 1972. At 332 pieces it is by far the biggest model here and combines buildings with road sections, making it a small town layout in a single box. It also shows that Legoland was already thinking beyond the single building, towards streets that connect several models into one scene.
