About Power Miners
Miners, crystals and monsters
The premise is simple and works well in play: the miners drive drills, diggers and grabbers into the rock, and the creatures living there fight back. The rock monsters are built from a handful of large moulded pieces and turn up in many of the sets, so almost every box comes with both sides of the conflict. The translucent crystals are the prize everyone is after. In 2010 the story moved deeper, towards the lava, with sets such as Lavatraz (8191-1, 382 pieces).
From command rig to small digger
The first wave in 2009 contained the biggest models. Titanium Command Rig (8964-1) leads with 707 pieces, followed by Underground Mining Station (8709-1) at 636 and Crystal Sweeper (8961-1) at 476. Boulder Blaster (8707-1, 294 pieces), Cave Crusher (8708-1, 260) and Thunder Driller (8960-1, 236) fill the middle of the range. From 2010, Claw Catcher (8190-1) also reaches 260 pieces. Smaller vehicles round out the list and are a cheap way to start. Six of these eight largest sets come from the first year, so if you are after the big machines, 2009 is where to look.
A short theme with a clear identity
Two years and 23 sets make Power Miners easy to complete. Fans often describe it as a spiritual successor to Rock Raiders from 1999, which also sent miners after crystals. Today the monsters and the crystal pieces are the elements people look for most. Every set page lists the full inventory, which helps when you are checking a second-hand set for missing pieces. The drill heads, tracks and translucent crystals also work well outside the theme, in cave scenes, space builds or anything that needs a bit of heavy machinery.
