About Universal Building Set
A box of possibilities
These sets were sold as raw material rather than as a single model. A typical box mixed bricks, plates, wheels and other basic elements, often with suggestions for things to build, and left the rest to the builder. That makes the theme a good record of what the core system looked like over three decades. There are no characters or settings to follow, only the bricks themselves.
Three decades of sizes
The earliest large entry is the Super Set (088-1) from 1969 with 615 pieces. In 1973 came two Basic Sets, 8-3 with 665 pieces and 7-3 with 412. Several boxes carry the theme's own name: Universal Building Set 912-1 (1976) and 404-1 (1977), each with 472 pieces, and 733-1 and 744-1 from 1980 with 504 and 553 pieces. The largest of all is the Super Basic Set (599-1) from 1982, at 744 pieces.
Sub-themes worth exploring
Much of the range sits in its sub-themes. Gears gathers the gear sets of the early 1970s, Supplemental covers small packs of extra bricks, Basic runs from 1985 to 2002, and Classic Basic groups releases from 1998 to 2000.
