About WeDo
How WeDo works
A WeDo model is small and simple by design. A hub connects a motor and sensors to a computer or tablet, where children arrange picture-based blocks to tell the model what to do: spin a fan, open a jaw, react to movement. Typical models include animals, vehicles and small machines. The emphasis is less on engineering than on the first steps of programming and on explaining what a model does. In the data, WeDo sits as a sub-theme of Mindstorms within Educational and Dacta, next to RCX and NXT.
Core sets through the years
The first set, WeDo Robotics Construction Set (9580-1) from 2008, has 158 pieces. The WeDo Resource Set (9585-1) of 2011 expanded the range and, at 326 pieces, is the largest set in the theme. The second generation arrived in 2016 with the WeDo 2.0 Core Set (45300-1), 284 pieces, alongside the WeDo 2.0 Replacement Pack (2000715-1) with 109 pieces and WeDo Mascot Mini Milo (2000447-1), a 31-piece model of the WeDo 2.0 mascot. Both generations share the idea of a hub, a motor and sensors, but WeDo 2.0 is a separate system with its own electronics.
A long tail of small packs
Beyond these, the theme consists of small items: all the remaining sets hold 40 pieces or fewer. Examples include the WeDo Miscellaneous Pack (5003178-1, 40 pieces) and the WeDo Minifigure Pack (5003180-1, 24 pieces), both from 2012, as well as software entries such as WeDo Software v1.2 and Activity Pack Site License (5003422-1) from 2009, which lists 2 pieces.
