About Chinese (Lunar) New Year

A seasonal theme with a long run

The theme is part of Seasonal, the parent theme for holiday and festival sets. Its subject is well suited to a recurring series: each year of the Chinese zodiac is linked to one of twelve animals, so there is always a new animal to build. Alongside the zodiac models, the theme also covers festival customs and decorations.

Following the zodiac

The earliest set is Year Of The Snake (10250-1) from 2013 with 243 pieces. The two largest entries also follow the zodiac: Easy Build Building Happening Piglet (6273754-1) from 2019 has 723 pieces, marking the Year of the Pig, and Easy Build Building Happening Rat (RAT-1) from 2020 has 754 pieces, marking the Year of the Rat. A run of smaller annual sets continues the cycle with Year of the Tiger (40491-1) from 2022 at 193 pieces, Year of the Rabbit (40575-1) from 2023 at 194 pieces and Year of the Dragon (40611-1) from 2024 at 213 pieces. Their similar size makes them easy to display as a row, adding one animal each year.

Traditions beyond the animals

Some sets focus on how the festival is celebrated. Lion Dance (40915-1) from 2026 has 480 pieces and depicts the lion dance performed during New Year celebrations. Festival Calendar (40678-1) from 2024 has 345 pieces and takes a broader look at the festive season. Both work well as seasonal decorations that can come out each year when the festival approaches.
