Not an ordinary TIE

Standard TIE fighters combine a ball cockpit with two flat hexagonal wings. Vader's prototype is different: its wings are bent inwards and the hull behind the cockpit is stretched, giving it a sharper, more aggressive profile. In the film it is the ship of the man in charge, picking off Rebel pilots one by one until a well-timed shot from the Millennium Falcon sends it spinning into space. That moment is part of what makes this fighter so recognisable to anyone who has seen the original film.
