Description

Into the blizzard

Early in The Empire Strikes Back, Luke fails to return to Echo Base after being attacked in the snow. Han sets out on a tauntaun, the shaggy, two-legged creatures the Rebels use to patrol the frozen planet, and rides into the freezing night to find him. It is a short sequence, but a very recognisable one, and it shows a different side of the saga: no starships or battles, just a rider, an animal and a hostile landscape.

A sculpture in bricks

There are no minifigures here. Both Han and the tauntaun are built entirely from bricks, which calls for a more sculptural approach than a typical vehicle. Curves, fur and posture have to be suggested with plates, slopes and careful layering. The 338 pieces cover 103 different part designs, giving the model plenty of variety to work with. The LLCA prefix in the set number also sets it apart from the usual numbering of Star Wars retail sets.

Snow and leather tones

White dominates, standing in for the tauntaun's coat and the snow of Hoth. Reddish brown covers clothing and gear, while light bluish grey and black add shading and detail. It is an unusual palette for a Star Wars model, where grey hulls are the norm. Those white and brown parts are also useful elsewhere, whether for winter scenes, animals, timber buildings or larger-scale figures of your own design. White in particular disappears quickly once you start building snowy landscapes, so it pays to keep these parts together when sorting.
