About FIRST LEGO League
How the competition works
Teams of young people design, build and program a robot that tackles a series of missions on a competition table. The missions change every year and follow a season theme, from food safety to water to energy. To make the table identical for every team, each season has a Challenge Kit containing all the mission models. The robot has to push, lift, collect or trigger these models within a fixed time, so they are built to take repeated handling. Beyond the season kits, the theme also includes smaller sets connected to the competition, which is why it reaches 135 entries.
Two thousand pieces per season
Recent Challenge Kits regularly pass 2,000 pieces. SUPERPOWERED Challenge Kit (45820-1) from 2022 leads with 2,179, followed by ANIMAL ALLIES Challenge Kit (45802-1) from 2016 with 2,167 and CITY SHAPER Challenge Kit (45809-1) from 2019 with 2,158. Food FACTOR Challenge Kit (9697-1) from 2011 has 2,115 pieces, FLL WORLD Class: Learning Unleashed Challenge Kit (45800-1) from 2014 2,098 and HYDRO DYNAMICS Challenge Kit (45804-1) from 2017 2,052. Useful for coaches
Coaches and clubs often need to rebuild a mission model or replace a lost element before a practice session. The parts list on each set page shows exactly which pieces a kit contains, so you can reorder only what is missing, and “What can I build?” shows whether the club's spare parts are enough for an older season's table. Older mission models are also worth a look outside the competition: many of them contain small mechanisms such as levers, flaps and latches that make good studies for your own builds.
