Largest villains by piece count

Witch Doctor (2283-1) from 2011 leads with 336 pieces, well ahead of Speeda Demon (6231-1) from 2012 at 192. Von Nebula (7145-1), the first major adversary from 2010, has 156 pieces, followed by Dragon Bolt (44009-1) from 2013 with 149 and Rotor (7162-1) from 2010 with 145. Fire Lord (2235-1, 125 pieces), Black Phantom (6203-1, 124) and Scorpio (2236-1, 104) complete the top eight. Five of these eight come from 2010 and 2011, the first two years of the line.

Built to look different

The villains use the same joint-and-armour system as the heroes, but they take far more varied shapes. Names like Dragon Bolt and Scorpio hint at creature forms, and the sets tend to include unusual limbs and weapon pieces that come in handy for your own custom figures. For many builders that makes the villains the more interesting half of the range to take apart. Taking a villain apart is also a good way to learn how the building system works, since joints, sockets and armour attach in the same way across the range.

Pairing them with the heroes

The heroes have their own sub-theme, Heroes, within Hero Factory. If you want to stage the battles from the story, pick sets from both lists released in the same year, as each wave brought new heroes and villains together. The parts lists make it easy to check what a rebuild needs before you buy used sets, and “What can I build?” shows which villains your loose parts already cover. Because villains and heroes share so many parts, a combined collection goes further than either half on its own.
