About Power Functions
Components, not models
Each set in this theme provides hardware for other builds rather than a model of its own. Many consist of a single element: the Power Functions Control Switch (8869-1), the Power Functions Light (8870-1), the Power Functions Extension Wire 50cm (8871-1), the Rechargeable Battery Box (8878-1) and the IR Speed Remote Control (8879-1), all from 2009. The largest by piece count is the Power Functions Motor Set (8293-1) from 2008, with 10 pieces.
Motorising a train
Rail fans are a key audience. Train Motor (RC) (8866-1) from 2009 and the Power Functions Train Motor (88002-1) from 2011 each contain 7 pieces and let you drive a train layout by infrared remote. Combined with a battery box and receiver, they turn a static train into a working one.
