About Powered Up

How the system works

At the centre of Powered Up is a hub: a battery box with built-in Bluetooth. Motors, lights and sensors plug into its ports, and the hub is controlled either by a handheld remote or by an app on a phone or tablet. That replaces the infrared receivers of Power Functions, which is why this theme is filed beneath it. Many trains and Technic models ship with Powered Up parts already inside; the entries here are the separately sold pieces for your own motorised builds. Note that the plugs differ from Power Functions, so older motors do not connect directly to a Powered Up hub.

The core line-up of 2019

After Light (88005-1) appeared in 2018, the main range followed in 2019. It includes Hub (Battery Box) (88009-1), Remote Control (88010-1), Train Motor (88011-1), Medium Linear Motor (88008-1), Color & Distance Sensor (88007-1) and Move Hub (88006-1). Train Motor is the largest entry at 7 pieces. Nearly everything else counts as a single piece. The standard hub is a battery box with two ports, while Move Hub, originally from the Boost programming set, has two motors built in.

Newer additions

The theme is still active. Rechargeable Battery (88021-1) joined in 2025 with 3 pieces, and the listings run up to 2026. That makes Powered Up the current motor system for trains and many other powered models, rather than a closed chapter like its predecessor.
