Between Duplo and Disney

Cars belongs to two parent themes at once: Duplo, which sets the brick size and target age, and Disney, which supplies the characters from the Pixar films. The result is a small range of pre-school sets built around cars that roll, ramps to launch them from and pit stops to service them. Because every piece is Duplo-sized, the sets connect with any other Duplo buildings or roads you may already have at home. The first film, released in 2006, is set around the small desert town of Radiator Springs, while the 2011 sequel sends the racers on a world tour.

The 2011 wave

Most sets appeared in 2011, around the release of the second film, which takes the racers to Tokyo and London. Tokyo Racing (5819-1, 45 pieces), World Grand Prix (5839-1, 35 pieces) and The Pit Stop (5829-1, 52 pieces) all date from that year. So does Big Bentley (5828-1), the largest set in the theme with 67 pieces, and Siddeley Saves the Day (6134-1) followed in 2012 with 34 pieces. Before that came Mack's Road Trip (5816-1) in 2010, also with 34 pieces.

Later releases

After the early 2010s, Cars returned to Duplo only occasionally. Lightning McQueen's Race Day (10924-1) from 2020 has 42 pieces, and McQueen's Visit to Doc's Garage (10456-1) from 2025 has 35. None of the sets goes beyond 70 pieces, which keeps them quick to build and easy for small children to handle.
