About Duplo

Bricks sized for small hands

A Duplo brick is twice as long, twice as wide and twice as tall as a standard brick. That makes it easier for toddlers to grip and much harder to swallow. The two systems still fit together, because standard bricks attach to the studs on top of Duplo bricks. Children can therefore mix both when they are ready to move on. In our catalogue, the earliest Duplo sets date from 1969 in the Basic Set sub-theme, while the sets filed here start in 1972.

The largest sets

Piece counts are modest because each element is big. Basic Bricks 250 pcs (3957-1) from 2005 tops the list with 250 pieces, and the Universal Building Set (1040-3) from 1976 has 1,454. Recent years have favoured sets that can be built three ways, such as the 3in1 Tree House (10993-1, 2023, 1,454 pieces), 3 in 1 Creative Ramps with Vehicles (10478-1, 2026, 111 pieces) and 3in1 Dinosaurs on Wheels (10451-1, 2025, 108 pieces). Discovery Forest with Wild Animals (10480-1) from 2026 has 131 pieces, while Big Fair (10840-1) from 2017 and Forest: Park (10584-1) from 2015 each pass the hundred mark.

Characters and play worlds

Duplo's sub-themes fall into two groups. One covers its own play worlds, including Town, Trains, Castle, Pirates, Western and Dino, along with baby toys such as Rattles. The other brings in characters children know from the screen: Bob the Builder, Thomas & Friends, Dora the Explorer, Peppa Pig, Bluey, Disney, Marvel, DC Comics and Jurassic World. Basic Set, with its boxes of loose bricks, is by far the largest sub-theme.
