About Classic Town
Where the minifigure grew up
The smiling minifigure arrived in 1978, and the town sets it lived in defined the brand for a generation. Classic Town gathers that era: gas stations, police stations, fire houses, hospitals, airports and harbours, laid out on grey road baseplates. With 412 sets it is one of the largest vintage themes, and its simple, cheerful style remains instantly recognisable. Compared with modern City sets the builds are more basic, yet many are remembered fondly for their clever play features.
Ports and airports
The biggest sets appeared around 1990. Launch & Load Seaport (6542-1) from 1991 is the largest at 1,078 pieces. The airport Century Skyway (6597-1) from 1994 has 905 pieces, and Airport Shuttle (6399-1) from 1990, famous for its monorail, has 786. Sail N' Fly Marina (6543-1) from 1994 adds 711 pieces of waterfront.
Trucks, police and racing
Several large sets sit just above 600 pieces. Big Rig Truck Stop (6393-1) from 1987 and Central Precinct HQ (6398-1) from 1993 both have 635 pieces, Metro Park & Service Tower (6394-1) from 1988 has 631, and Victory Lap Raceway (6395-1), also from 1988, has 614. Together they show how broad the theme was, from road haulage to motorsport. Later sets introduced the fictional Octan fuel brand, which still appears in City today.
Buying vintage sets
