About Outback
An expedition-themed corner of Town
Instead of shops and fire stations, Outback deals with remote places: a bush airstrip, a jungle river, a mountain in need of a rescue team. Vehicles are built for rough ground and water, and a news crew follows the action. It is still recognisably Town, with the same minifigure style and scale, but it points towards the adventure themes that the company explored more fully later on. The range was released in 1997 and not continued.
The five sets
Outback Airstrip (6444-1) is the largest at 167 pieces. Crisis News Crew (6553-1) follows with 136 pieces and Amazon Crossing (6490-1) with 119. The two smallest are Mountain Rescue (6487-1, 68 pieces) and Outback Racer (6550-1, 49 pieces). None of them is particularly large, which makes the whole line a manageable target if you want to collect a complete Town sub-theme.
