The space themes of the 1990s were mostly set on alien worlds. Space Port took a different approach and modelled a launch facility on Earth, with a look inspired by real-world spaceflight rather than invented starships. Minifigures appear as astronauts, technicians and ground crew, and the vehicles are the kind you would expect around a launch site: fuel trucks, rovers and support jets. In that sense it continues the idea behind the smaller 1995 Launch Command range, but on a larger scale. For younger builders this made the theme feel like a plausible part of their own town, not a distant fantasy.

Buildings and vehicles

Mission Control (6456-1) is the flagship at 496 pieces, followed by Space Simulation Station (6455-1) at 249 pieces, a training facility for astronauts. Countdown Corner (6454-1) has 134 pieces and Fuel Truck (6459-1) has 120. The rest of the list consists of smaller vehicles: Space Port Jet (6465-1, 66 pieces), Com-Link Cruiser (6453-1, 61 pieces), Lunar Rover (6463-1, 37 pieces) and Mini Rocket Launcher (6452-1, 32 pieces).

Displaying the range today

Because everything was released in the same year and shares a colour scheme, the sets combine naturally into one launch complex. That makes Space Port a satisfying sub-theme to collect as a whole. When buying second-hand, check the parts list on each set page to confirm that small elements such as antennas, dishes and minifigure accessories are present, since these are the parts that tend to go missing first.
