Description

Why a second ARC-170

The ARC-170 is best known from the battle over Coruscant at the start of Revenge of the Sith, where clone crews fly alongside the Jedi. Its first set, 7259, arrived with the film in 2005. By 2010, The Clone Wars animated series had renewed interest in Republic hardware, and many of its ships were given new models. Set 8088 belongs to that wave. For collectors, owning both versions is a neat way to see how design approaches changed over five years.

Building the fighter

There are 114 different part designs among the 396 pieces, which gives a good balance between variety and rhythm. The wings are built as mirrored pairs, so parts of the process repeat, while the cockpit and tail bring their own shapes and techniques. The finished fighter has a broad wingspan and is comfortable to hold and swoosh around. Four minifigures provide a crew, so it works as a playset as much as a display model for a prequel-era collection.

A dark red accent

White, black and light bluish grey form the base, with dark red as the fourth main colour. Those markings give the ship a livelier look than the plain white and grey of the 2005 edition and fit the coloured unit markings that clone forces are known for. Dark red is also a handy colour to collect. It is more muted than standard red and works well in castles, interiors, trains and classic cars, where bright red can feel too loud.
