Description

The first scene on Hoth

The Empire Strikes Back opens with Luke on patrol across the snowfields of Hoth. He is knocked from his tauntaun by a wampa, a huge white predator, and wakes up hanging upside down in its cave. With his lightsaber lying in the snow out of reach, he uses the Force to pull it into his hand, cuts himself free and escapes into the blizzard. It is a short but memorable sequence and an early sign of Luke's growing powers.

Building a location

Most Star Wars sets are built around a vehicle. This one is a place, which makes for a different kind of build: walls, ceilings and rocky ice formations rather than wings and engines. The four minifigures give you enough characters to replay the scene from the film or invent new ones. The cave also works as part of a larger winter layout, so if you own other Hoth sets it can slot in alongside them and extend the landscape.

White, grey and black

White is the dominant colour, supported by dark and light bluish grey and black for rock, shadow and detail. That palette is ideal for snow and ice, and it stays useful long after the cave has been taken apart. Builders working on winter scenes, mountains or polar bases always need more white bricks and plates.
