Description

The first attack run

At the Battle of Yavin, the Rebel Alliance sends its fighters against the Death Star in squadrons. Gold Squadron's Y-wings go into the trench first, trying to hit the exhaust port that can destroy the battle station, and they pay heavily for it. It is a tense, often overlooked part of the finale of A New Hope. The Y-wing itself is the Rebels' dependable bomber: slower than the X-wing, but sturdy and heavily armed, and it looks like a machine that has seen years of service.
