In A New Hope, the landspeeder is simply how Luke gets around his uncle's moisture farm. It carries him to Obi-Wan Kenobi's home and later to Mos Eisley, where he sells it to help pay for passage aboard the Millennium Falcon. That sale marks the moment he leaves his old life behind.
