Description

A squadron on the shelf

The TIE fighter is the most recognisable Imperial ship in Star Wars, with its ball cockpit and flat wing panels screaming past the Millennium Falcon from A New Hope onwards. A collection set shows how many directions that one basic design can be taken in. Displayed together, several TIEs look less like individual models and more like a formation, which is a very different effect from a single large ship sitting alone on a shelf.

What 87 unique parts tells you

Only 87 of the 685 pieces are unique, an unusually low share. In practice this means many parts appear again and again, and the build contains repeated sequences, which is what you would expect when several ships share the same basic structure. Some builders enjoy that rhythm; others find it less varied. For anyone who reuses bricks, though, it is a genuine bonus, because larger quantities of identical parts are exactly what bigger custom builds require.

Early bluish greys

Blue heads the colour list, followed by black, dark bluish grey and light bluish grey. Blue in the lead is unusual for Imperial craft, and it makes these parts attractive for quite different models too. The year matters as well: 2004 was the period when the older greys gave way to the bluish shades, and this set already uses the newer colours. That makes finding replacement parts much easier than it is for UCS sets from a few years earlier, where the old and new greys can clash noticeably when mixed in one model.
