Where the theme started

The Phantom Menace reached cinemas in 1999, the same year the first LEGO® Star Wars sets appeared. Alongside models from the new film, the range also reached back to the original trilogy, and this pairing is one of those early releases. For collectors interested in how the theme began, it is a small piece of history, showing how starfighters were interpreted with the parts and colours available at the end of the nineties.

Late-nineties bricks

The palette is light grey, dark grey, black and blue. Those greys are the original shades, used before the switch to bluish greys a few years later, and the difference is easy to see if you mix these parts with newer ones. With 120 different part designs among 410 pieces, there is plenty of variety for two small ships. The TIE fighter and Y-wing are built in quite different ways, so the second model never feels like a repeat of the first.

A battle in a box

The TIE fighter is the Empire's fast, lightly built fighter, flown in large numbers. The Y-wing is the Rebel Alliance's sturdy bomber, part of the attack on the Death Star in A New Hope. Put them together and you have two opponents ready to go. Three minifigures provide pilots for both sides, so the set works on its own for play without borrowing figures from elsewhere in the collection. It is a compact way to recreate a classic dogfight.

Rebuilding an early set

Many copies of set 7150 now survive as loose bricks in storage boxes or second-hand lots.
