Description

The race that changed Anakin's life

Podracing is one of the set pieces of Episode I: huge engines tethered to tiny cockpits, screaming across the Tatooine desert. Anakin enters the race so that Qui-Gon Jinn can secure the parts his ship needs, and his victory also wins the boy his freedom. The set turns that sequence into a play scene with racers and surroundings. Nine minifigures give you pilots and onlookers, so you can stage the starting grid as well as the finish.

A snapshot of 1999

This was part of the very first wave of Star Wars sets, and the colours show it. The light grey and dark grey used here are the old, warmer shades that were later replaced by the bluish greys used today. Orange adds bright accents, while black handles engines and machinery. If you plan to combine this set with newer ones, keep the colour change in mind: the old and new greys look noticeably different side by side.

Build and play

The 907 pieces include 182 unique parts, which keeps the build varied across several separate models rather than one large structure. That also makes it easy to share between two or three children, each taking a racer or part of the scenery. Once built, the pieces are made to be moved around and raced, so this is more of a toy than a display piece, although long-time collectors value it as an early milestone of the theme.
