Description

Through the planet core

Having visited the underwater Gungan city, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi need a fast route to Theed. With Jar Jar Binks as their reluctant guide, they take a Gungan submarine, known in the film as a bongo, through the watery core of Naboo. Along the way they meet enormous sea creatures and escape by the narrowest of margins. It is one of the most memorable sequences in Episode I and a rare Star Wars adventure that happens entirely underwater.

A piece of early history

As a 1999 set, the Gungan Sub dates from the launch year of the Star Wars theme. Its main colours are blue, light grey, black and dark grey, and those greys are the older shades used before the switch to bluish greys a few years later. If you mix vintage and modern sets, the difference is easy to see. That makes the sub a small piece of the theme's early history as well as a model from the film.

An organic shape

With 115 different part designs among its 379 pieces, the sub has a varied build and a shape that looks more like a sea creature than a machine. That makes it an interesting contrast to the angular fighters and walkers that dominate most Star Wars collections.
