What a Challenge Kit actually contains

Unlike a standard LEGO set, this kit doesn't build into one finished model with a single instruction booklet. Instead, the pieces are used to build several small mission models that sit on the competition table during FLL tournaments, where robots interact with them. The parts are chosen for function first: Technic axles, gears, pins and connectors form the mechanical base, supplemented by regular brick elements for the outer shapes. Teams are often allowed to adapt or extend these mechanisms within the tournament rules, as long as the core function stays intact.

A functional rather than decorative colour scheme

Black and dark bluish grey dominate, the standard Technic palette, alongside light bluish grey structural pieces and red used to mark moving or important parts.
